Your Friends Close marks my feature film debut as director and producer. A suspenseful, intimate drama with dark comedic elements and a generous dash of science fiction, the film asks - Who would you lose...to win? Currently streaming to view for free on Amazon, YouTube and Vimeo, this fast-paced, deep-thinking film has a running time of 80 minutes, a diagetic soundtrack of great party music, and cameos from video-game personalities Yahtzee Croshaw and Lisa Foiles.
Becca and Jason might save the world, or destroy it. The husband-and-wife design team have created “Your Friends Close,” a video game which forces you to choose between collaboration and backstabbing in a high stakes multi-player competition. (Think Facebook with a high score, or Myspace–with machetes.) At a party celebrating the sale of their game, a sudden betrayal creates an opportunity for one close friend to share in their life-changing success. But at what cost?
Feminist film blog Agnès Films wrote "it's inspiring to witness [Kelvin and screenwriter Wilbur] pull off an ambitious feature so skillfully," and remarked on the "compelling story," the "delightfully clever" screenplay, the "dance-like flow" of the transitions, and the "entertaining and grounded performances." British gaming magazine Cubed published a two-page review, saying "The relatively small setting forces together conflicting egos, and the clash of the big dreams and endless ambition of these creatives with a relatively mundane setting is tough to watch, but impossible to pull away from." Tiny Mix Tapes made this director's day when they titled their review "Dark Whit Stillman + Portal = Your Friends Close." Twinfinite wrote of the "taut, restless direction" and "excellent" writing, which "balances character-driven drama and dark comedy with video game theory and nerdy inside jokes." Mr. K's Geek Cornucopia called the movie "extraordinarily quotable" and wrote, "Jocelyn possesses an enigmatic and intelligent quality that reminds me of Lena Headey or Anna Karina."
